Biography
Anton Tonchev graduated with a Master’s degree in Medicine from the Medical University of Varna in 1998. From 1998 to 2003, he worked at the research unit of the Department of Neurosurgery at Kanazawa University in Kanazawa, Japan. In 2003, he defended his PhD thesis titled "Quantity and Phenotype of Proliferating Cells in the Post-Ischemic Brain of Adult Monkeys". In 2004, he joined the Department of Forensic Medicine, Deontology, and Cell Biology as an Assistant Professor, and in 2008, transitioned to the Department of Anatomy, Histology, and Embryology. In 2007, he defended his Doctor of Sciences (DSc) thesis titled "Long-Term Fate and Molecular Control of Endogenous Progenitor Cells in the Adult Primate Telencephalon". He obtained his board certification in Anatomy, Histology, and Cytology in 2008.
From 2009, he served as a Senior Assistant Professor, and in 2010, he was appointed Associate Professor at the Medical University of Varna. Since 2013, he has been a full Professor at the Department of Anatomy and Cell Biology. He served as the Head of the Department of Anatomy and Cell Biology between 2012 and 2024. He is also the founder of the elective course in "Neurobiology" at the Medical University of Varna. He is a recipient of a Humboldt Research Fellowship (2009–2011) and an Institutional Partnership Grant (2014–2017) for joint research projects with the Max Planck Institute for Biophysical Chemistry in Göttingen, Germany.
The primary focus of Anton Tonchev’s scientific research includes brain stem cells, adult neurogenesis, and brain regeneration. Prof. Tonchev is the main organizer of the international conference "Black Sea Neurogenesis" (www.blacksea-neuro.org). He has served as a scientific supervisor and consultant to over 10 PhD students, primarily in the field of neurogenesis. Since 2018, he has been the Director of the Research Institute at the Medical University of Varna.
